My Daddy's Eyes
They've passed from him to me to boy...
I look into my Daddy’s eyes,
he softly hums a lullaby.
My tears have long since dried away –
I’d given up my fight to play
and with the gentle rocking sweep,
he’ll carry me to peaceful sleep.
*
I look into my Daddy’s eyes
and sit before him, fear disguised –
I knew my fate was surely sealed
when he got home from work and kneeled...
a sentence harsh, my punishment,
and to my room I slowly went.
*
I look into my Daddy’s eyes
and his approval was my prize,
for I had found a perfect man
that made me smile like no one can.
He knew that instant it was real
and gave permission – “seal the deal.”
*
I look into my Daddy’s eyes...
we say our silent, short goodbyes.
I know it’s best, the pain’s too much –
so scared I am to even touch,
for fear that I’ll remember well
the pain of this: our last farewell.
*
I look into my Daddy’s eyes –
they’re strong and wise, and never shy.
They’re hazel, brown, and sometimes green –
my own reflected back at me.
I stand before the mirror bright,
so ready now, all dressed in white.
*
I look into my Daddy’s eyes
now echoed in my son’s small size.
It seems a legacy’s begun,
my father’s love won’t be undone.
It’s passed from him, to me, to boy...
my Daddy’s eyes so full of joy.

I love how each stage of life is captured through the lens of your father’s eyes. Just beautiful.
