My Black Husband

Life beside you has been a remarkable journey, far from easy, though I never held any illusions about its ease.

When I took your hand in marriage, I vowed to be your anchor through tempestuous storms, your sail amidst turbulent seas, and your gentle breeze on sunlit days.

Little did I realize how often I would draw strength from your unwavering spirit.

Your resilience shines through the hardships of raising our children, navigating the shadows cast by a world eagerly waiting to label you.

Few are interested in the story of a successful and honorable Black man.

The world seeks to uphold the savage narrative it's created, pushing against your spirit until violence erupts.

They cling to sensationalized chronicles of violence and despair, which dismiss the quiet dignity of a man who provides for his family and nurtures hope in the hearts of his children.

Daily, you combat the insidious tales that seek to diminish your worth.

Yes, the world craves the savage caricature that's been painted, and in those fleeting moments, cameras flicker to life, capturing the misguided predictions as they unfold.

But I know the truth of who you are.

I've witnessed you endure in silence, weep in despair, and rise anew as you confront each challenge, guiding our family toward a brighter future.

You teach our children the beauty of their humanity, instilling in them the courage to confront not just the world outside but the mirrors that reflect their own demons.

Each day, you reinforce lessons of love and dignity, shaping their understanding of self-worth in a society that so sorely seeks to undermine it.

So I implore you, my Black husband: hold your head high, and defy the narratives that seek to confine you.
