My Address is Water

Today, I emerge from Lake Washington

skin chilled from spring swimming.

I am blue and sleek

seal-like.

Yes, here is the water of the world,

the dark navy of the lake

the waves edged with lighter blue

the bright green of leaves

floating,

small prayers.

What are the colors

of lakes

oceans rivers streams

the puddle outside

my door?

What holds the body,

embraces all?

We are 60 percent water.

Our oceans hold

96 percent of the world’s water.

And our lungs?

Our lungs are more

than 80 percent water.

Were they gills in another life?

For all the shades

of water

I am grateful

For all the colors I am

in water

I am grateful.

My body the pale boat

that takes me there.
