Thanks for reading this Alliterative poetic tribute to one of my favourite events in nature! I was inspired to compose this after seeing footage taken in Tewksbury, England this week. The footage was posted on the BBC News site and can be seen here.

A Little About Murmuration

Murmuration is a truly spectacular phenomenon of the natural world and involves starlings flying perfectly together in synchronicity.

Generally, it is a flock of at least 500 or more (there have been known to be murmurations with thousands all flying together).

  • Primarily the reason starlings fly in a murmuration is for protection against predators. Even the most intimidating and ferocious birds of prey like peregrine falcons and hawks are unlikely to try and target one starling in a group of hundreds all flying in unison. The "murmur" sound also plays a protective part too.
  • Another key reason why starlings do this is to survive when temperatures drop. During cold and bitter winters and at other times of the year, starlings flying together keeps them warm.
  • Finally, a third reason why starlings participate in this strange act is to convene and swap information, about everything from great places to eat etc.

Do other birds murmurate?

One of the most fascinating things about starling murmuration is that it is only starlings that do it. There are other birds that fly together in large flocks and produce similar visual spectacles. However, those crowds of birds do not produce the 'murmur' sound that makes the starling event so special and gives it a name.

I loved learning about this!! Witnessing it live would be so amazing…. I think “Makes me modest” was my favorite line! Beautiful tautogram 😁😁😁

  • Very cool poem and I learned a lot about murmuration, also very cool

  • You know I'm captivated by alliteration and other poetic devices. I wish I could steal Mike's comment. But I'l just suffice to say that one of my favorite songs is the "M" song from Sesame Street (random, I know, but it is what it is...LOL).

  • All I can say in Mmmmmmmmmmmmmmmmm

  • Such a beautiful alliterative poem! I had no idea what murmuration is, so I was so fascinated reading about it!

Beautiful Paul! I would be in awe to see these starlings mumurate too. Just watched the video that went with your poem. It is like they form beautiful pieces of art in the sky. Your words describe the feeling awe perfectly. Thanks I enjoyed this poem
