Mother Nature

The Test

By Marilyn LargenPublished 3 years ago 1 min read
The Forest

Mother Nature sits at the edge of the forest

Checking exams.

I can’t read mine

and everyone else is almost done.

She assures me things will get easier,

what with my knowledge of evolutionary weight.

The animals frolic with one another

as they run by me

I am confused.

I shift my gaze to the sky above

and notice she has floated upward into the blue.

I haven’t turned in my test yet.

A rush of fear runs through my chest.

Is this my last chance?

The animals in the forest become still.

They stare at me with disappointment.

A gray rabbit folds his ears behind him and

turns his head away from me after our eyes meet.

The wind howls at me

directing my attention back to the exam.

It’s not as fuzzy now.

I begin slowly and methodically

checking and double checking each answer choice.

I am doing the best I can. I say to myself.

No-one ever said I had to understand the workings of the universe.
