Mortality

Gone too soon

By DonJuan Carter-WoodardPublished 5 years ago 2 min read

My blood is blue before oxygen hits it

So does that insinuate that the blood I bleed is unnatural

Life was never meant to be so cheap

But it can be taken so freely

Heartbeat can stop on a dime

This will not be my attempt to make a dollar out of $.15

Nor try to make sense of the atrocities we have grown numb to

A custom to seeing

Yet feeling nothing

Savoring the taste of blood

No wonder twilight was a hit love story

Dying seems to be what we do best

From the streets of deep east Oakland to Budapest

Does the Hue you protrude make your life worth less

Or does it only count when it is broadcast live and direct

Separate people can see the same picture and feel no remorse

But feelings change when the killing and dying is so close to home

Even the city of Angels takes a few more souls from time to time

Learning that not only Red Bull gives you wings

And tonight

No one really wants to be fly

All these dreams of youth can be shattered at high impact

But I was always told God doesn’t make mistakes

Wishing that the big picture came with an interpreter

Now we interrupt your local broadcast

Life and death go together like peas and carrots

Chips and noodle

Greed and politics

Knee and neck

But it still hurts to see a life cut short at the cusp of living

Ever think you can over live your life

Live a life so full

That you gas out all of your blessings faster than expected

Crashed into a mountain

Wrapped around a tree

Spun into oncoming traffic

Or taken in your sleep

Shot in the back

Head

Or chest

This is just a small list of the untimely deaths

Tonight I think I’ll have a drink

And remember to be thankful for the little things

For tomorrow doesn’t know who is on the guest list yet

No time to live with regrets

For we all are mortal

And today is the last day will ever be this young
