Mimicking Love

Living a Lie

Mimicking Love

On abated breath held hostage by stammering lips,

I speak what’s in my heart, what’s in my soul.

But cautioned by those offering caring tips,

To safeguard the memories under my control.

Some shallow and tearful and some were mocked by many,

Of times of my youth when life was unleashed.

Yet, to hold them once more is worth every penny,

In old age viewed with knowledge increased.

Say what you will but to gossip is expected,

When people travel roads many self directed.

It’s not the destination that offers the reward,

But the journey uncharted that’s traveled in accord.

Sabers sharp blood stained with victories,

Words like arrows poisoned ripped at my heart.

Grasping remnants of love’s enchantments,

Striped of meaning lying hallow and torn apart.

Is it my life’s folly this end that I see,

With scorching flames audible love’s retort.

Somber echoes of dreams that ceased to be,

Slay remaining hopes like empty ship’s ports.

So tell me again how love lives there,

Midst thistles and thorns where death adorned.

For to continue to speak of how you care,

Fires the empty furnace with coals of scorn.
