Midnight Eyes
Sonnet
I dare not compare thee to a summers day
For I stumble into midnight in those eyes,
No innocence transacted when they stray
Just mirror shards refracting storm churned skies
There is fire still that burns like ancient stars
Yet they tremble with the harshest kiss of ice
I can see each toll you paid among your scars
But I cannot comprehend their asking price
Perhaps this darkness holds the answers sought
I could settle in the eye of you and surrender
Whist the battle just beyond it all is wrought
I will be cradled in the calm of something tender
Though the sun is warm he is often quite severe,
I’d rather an honest burn, and one less cavalier
