I made the greatest mistake one can make after healing;
I found our old messages and decided to take
A long-awaited trip down memory lane
//
At first, it felt light
I could see the love we shared
I remembered the ease with which we talked
Of my day, you always cared
As I read on and on I fell back into the way being with you was
The way I once felt in those messages
How so simple,
How so easy
Loving you was
//
I missed the way conversation flowed;
I missed your little jokes
I missed the witty banter;
I missed the way for what to say, you would always know
//
I stumbled upon a time you wrote that you felt you didn’t deserve me
Funny, it was not an isolated event, but rather,
A common theme that came to be
//
As I read and read
And scrolled and scrolled
There, before me, I could see
The entire layout of our story;
The ups and downs;
The highs and lows
//
The times I came to really love you
And the times I really didn’t know
The times you bore to me parts of your soul
And the times I now know you were lying
The times I yearned for more of your love
And the times you’d left me crying
The times I’d make a jealous jab
And the times you’d come to your defence
The times I’d swear this was the final time
And the times the distance between us grew tense
//
Reading while knowing just how we’d come to be,
Our exchanges simply made sense
And while I thought I’d missed the way we were,
I no longer think it’s true;
There’s no way I could miss a relationship in which
Of who you were at your core, I hadn’t a clue
