Memories With No Regrets

A shallow glimpse into the past

Would it be a surprise to know you were on my mind yesterday,

Many years have passed like water down the drain,

But I still remember every single year,

For only a little while, then the painful memories remain.

***

We weren’t worthy,

Too young, too incomplete, too strong,

Substances took fast, took hold,

And it all resounded wrong.

***

I’m sure you’ve often wondered over the remaining years,

The bottle of time emptying so slowly, day by day,

Where’d we end up, lost in our dreams,

Soured by the essence, the loss of the chemical way.

***

On the day of the year, I often revisit,

To remind myself of the lessons we learned,

Heart wrenching, solemn dreams missed,

From others we found the theme we yearned.

***

Another day, another hour, another year,

We’ll live in different realities,

The best of these our destinies,

Given to us when we gave up, setting us free.

***

One day in the distant future,

I’ll write of my gratitude,

In the meantime, please know you have been forgiven,

Many times over, as is my due.

***

Live the day in blissful ignorance,

Replacing that shut off, unemotional heart,

The dawn will colour the land,

As the new day begins to start.

***

A lesson woven in between the love and the pain,

A wasted life, you’ll not think that the case,

I’m glad you made the necessary decisions,

Bowed out with infinite grace.

***

You were not made for any other,

Another miniature you thrown into the mix,

That necessitates a culling,

It would have been the quickest fix.

***

So long to those thoughts of yesteryear,

Until another memory rises from the ashes,

Forgotten, now the best has decayed,

A word transfixed, a look empowered, a survival clashes.

***

I’ve never held a regret,

For the future we were left to follow,

In fact, holding on, resisting,

Would have seen us both lead a life of resounding hollow.

About the Creator

Colleen Millsteed

My first love is poetry — it’s like a desperate need to write, to free up space in my mind, to escape the constant noise in my head. Most of the time the poems write themselves — I’m just the conduit holding the metaphorical pen.
