Mask of Darkness

I took a walk one night, it was just like every other night.
On this night however besides being dark, it was cold.
Cold enough to need my black hoodie, so I put it on.
I stepped outside into the moonlight night; down the street I went.
At first it was a peaceful walk as I chose the direction to go,
I found myself going down a street that I did barely know.
Strange people began to follow me, they meant me harm I'm sure.
I picked up my pace just a bit, even as they did theirs.
I turned the corner and ran a bit as I pulled the hood over my head.
They tried to follow, and the street was dark, but here I had a plan.
I made it to the darkest spot and masked myself against the wall.
They tried to find me; invisible I was black clothes against a black wall.
They looked right at me, but could not see me in the darkest place of all.
Soon they gave up, and on their way they went, looking back again and again.
I remained there in my mask of darkness for a few minutes more to be sure.
Then off I went, not the way I came, but to the other way where they were not.
Down the street I went looking back from time to time; but they were not there
By then, my walk was done, so I went home being sure no one followed again.
