Markings
a poem about the irrepressible love for that person in the back of your mind

Your name is a stain on my mind.
You tarnish and taint every word
That I utter:
Your name’s natural
Habitat is hidden
In my mouth.
Under my tongue.
Between my teeth.
On my breath.
Your name is a spot, a speckle.
A splash. A fleck. A freckle.
Your name is an
Imperfection. A flaw.
But your name and your words
And your body and face
Always inspire awe.
Your name is the colour I smudge
On my cheeks, and what’s printed on the pages.
Your name is branded
Behind my eyes,
And it’s burned back there for ages.
But your name is more than just a word.
Your name has a double meaning.
Your name is the name it hurts it recall:
The only thing dreaming.
