Many Moments Fleeting
that make this house a home

All the kitchen counters cluttered
with bowls of basil and tomatoes.
A loaf of fresh bread, sliced and buttered
between the bounty of my garden rows.
Rows of jars line pantry shelves.
Sunshine gathered and stored for colder days,
trapped in fruits from seeds we grew ourselves.
A wonder that never fails to amaze.
A house and garden set inside
a lot one hundred twenty feet deep
and forty five feet wide.
Passed on by the busy city street.
Two kids keep growing taller and more able:
a daughter that chops and chats away;
a son who grumbles as he sets the table.
I wash. Dad cooks. We share the details of our day.
The rhythm of each day, week, month and seasons
is always adding while the old is repeating.
With quiet pauses to reflect on reasons
and be grateful for the many moments fleeting
that make this house a home.
