Manifestations in Striations

Stretch marks and body image

When we grow up, we may add imagery to our skin in the form of tattoos.

Yet, as we grow, our skin may form imagery all on its own.

It stretches, fissures, scars; creating new patterns and pictures.

These scars run up the chest,

Reaching upward, spreading outward,

Like an oak tree’s branches, reaching up to the sky.

They run down the arms

In long jagged lines,

Like rivulets of rain tracking down a window.

They run over the hips

In curved lines, progressing in length,

Like sea foam at the edges of calm waves.

They run down the legs,

Reaching downward, spreading outward,

Like bolts of lightning reaching down through the sky.

We’re often told that these scars are ugly, but they don’t need to be.

We can consider them as badges commemorating our maturation;

As adornments celebrating that we are a part of nature.
