Magnolia

Poem for True Colours Challenge

By Gordon McGregor Published 5 years ago 1 min read

It slowly awakens

In a world of without light

A brown seed of hope

That has known only night

Shaken by warmth

By rainwater too

It starts its great journey

To discover life anew

It then fights and squeezes

With energy and might

New shoots and fresh buds

On their way to the light

From the earth it emerges

Greeting the world with a hope

Colourful forest surrounds it

On the gentlest of slope

It’s branches grow quickly

Its leaves many fold

Later it blossoms in a beautiful

Pink and yellow and gold

A Magnolia Tree

Using colour to show

But with a form and a function

To help life to grow

It is a home to the many

From beetle to bird

All bringing their colours

Nature’s voice to be heard

A Tanager of scarlet

Joined by a Warbler and Finch

The Green Woodpecker surveys

The trunk inch by inch

It's a shelter to others

Such as squirrel and deer

Attracted by leaves and bark

Through the seasons of year

It enriches the lives

Of the people we know

Drawn by the spectrum

Of colours on show

Once the blossom is faded

It’s use is not gone

The fruit and the seed

Will help nature go on

The colour returns

To a brown once again

Completing the circle

For another time when

The colours of nature

Can act on the stage

In our wonderful world

For us all to engage

nature poetry
