Lovestuck

A ballad

I once slept deep, without start,

Through the hours of the night,

Held safe beside your beating heart,

Your well-known arms held tight;

I knew not of a truer home,

Or peace; then, all was right.

//

We learned as one of pleasure

Through the hours of the night,

That moon-cast time was treasure

And all the world was right,

We felt like the first lovers

In the gleam of candlelight.

//

But cruel Selene is fickle

In the hours of the night,

When her light waned to a trickle

Your love, in turn, took flight-

Aphrodite's just as volatile

As the Queen of Waning Light.

//

With glee, she plucked the arrow

In the hours of the night;

The wound it left was narrow,

When she took it from your side,

But, being vain, and fond of games,

She left the shaft in mine.

//

And so, I'll leave a candle burning

Through the hours of the night,

In hopes my stubborn, weary yearning

Pulls you back home to my light;

I'll warm my fingers in the flame,

And will you to my sight.

//

Lie and say you think of me

Through the hours of the night,

Or help me pull my arrow free;

Release me from this plight,

Or else, I fear I'm doomed to love

You all my worthless life.

    Oh this is extraordinary, from start to finish Chloe. 'We felt like the first lovers In the gleam of candlelight.' Is a beautiful line. 'Lie and say you think of me' really hit hard. And that finish was simply perfect.
