Lotus Eaters

a Queen of the Gulls poem

Yes, I have heard

the sung tragedies

of the lost mermaid and her princess,

the Unbelonging Muses,

the gulls and their mournful queen.

Yet, none have haunted

as carelessly

as the Lotus Eaters.

*

Together, they unrest

here in this mass shipwreck, a graveyard

named after heartbreak: Chaos.

For centuries, it has caused

even the wildest hearts

to wither and rot beyond

repair, left entirely unaware

that they grew desolate.

*

Then, they too became Lotus Eaters,

snares for the next covetous fools

who sail through carelessly,

hunting the Heart of the Sea

or a mermaid and her starborn jewels.

Look at those hearts, aching

for oaths sworn in certitude:

the only freedom from their curse.

This is an amazing poem. Lines like "snares for the next covetous fools who sail through carelessly, hunting the Heart of the Sea" are so captivating and draw me in for the read. Well done.
