Lost the Masterwork to the Abyss

A Remix of Selected Poems by Hannah Moore

By Paul StewartPublished about a year ago Updated about a year ago 2 min read

where do poems we write in the night go

while we lie, dreaming and scheming

perfection is borne of ignorance or dissonance

words flow as freely as the singing of the sea

I wrought a masterwork, my Iliad, my Raven

in the night

there was no battle or trouble, its inception- subtle

the cacophony of syllabic majesty is yet gone

a travesty

*

in the arms of sleep, the veils lifted, focus sinuous

but as quickly as those words came, the abyss reclaimed

as its own, cruel beyond reason, internal treason

masterwork lost to the hippocampus, to short-term existence

in the night

the words faded and eroded, forever shrouded

as sleep forsakes my memories and triumphant creations

without discrimination or distinction

*

the gaps, the gaps they left behind, those missing words and missing lines

the stirring in my gut, the want, no need, to plant my literary seed

are evidence, with the faintest echoes of the masterwork, the majesty

in the night.

as the summer morning light, golden with promise, polarises me.

I wonder, when all is done when fears have gone, if my mind, less mired

if the dreams of words at night will reignite in the morning light.

Thanks for reading!

Author's Notes: So, since my Remix Me Challenge a few months ago, I've been really doing all I could to put off plans of my own to try and remix the work of another creator on Vocal. I feel bad, as I am a great believer in not asking others to do things, especially creative things, that you don't do yourself. It was only in passing conversation in comments between Hannah Moore and myself about various things, as usual (including a recurring idea to work together in some capacity, given the success of her beautiful piece Redemption, for the aforementioned unofficial challenge) that I felt compelled to finally have a go. So, there you go. I just hope I did her wonderful words some kind of justice or at least didn't tarnish them.

For complete transparency, here are the Hannah Moore originals I borrowed and took inspiration from for the above piece:

I love it! Totally did them justice, I hear echoes of my heart in it, of my experience, my sense of pleasure in joining up the words, my sense of playfulness, my sense of failure and self directed frustration too, and then also yours overlaid, like a harmony.
