Top Story - August 2025

From Friday morning writers.com zoom group:

Quote:

“I am out with lanterns, looking for myself.” ―Emily Dickinson

Prompt:

Write about looking: looking for, looking with…

_______

I finally opened my eyes

and found I couldn’t see.

--

I looked around my life

and couldn’t find me.

--

I searched high and low

for some clue as to who

I once was outwardly and inside

but I couldn’t find who I was

or where I might hide.

--

I lit lanterns in my soul

and searched there far and wide;

all I found were remnants

of self-denial and lies.

--

I found a love that rarely sated,

a love that was anything

but reciprocated.

--

I found a heart too deep in denial

to admit how crushed it had been,

and a mind so cluttered

it couldn’t think above the din.

--

I found a soul broken,

stabbed with silence,

seeking any semblance of balance.

--

At the crux of it all was she,

destroyer of all that lay within me,

emotional terrorism at its finest,

where lies rolled off the tongue

as if they were honest.

--

Deep within me lay a broken heart,

left shattered, falling apart.
