LONDON A WORLD OF SOOT AND SUN

Men on street corners Outside pubs Tempers frayed

By Paul AslingPublished 4 years ago 1 min read

People slouching

In the dirty linkwork of streets

As dirty as their lies

Walking in their own filth

Dustbins and shadows

Commotion laughter and quarrelling

Children going to school

With empty stomachs

Coming home to no food

Caught in the fires

Of their own suffering.

Children playing and shouting

Water in potholes shimmering

With the glow of streetlamps

Mothers and friends talking

On worn concrete steps.

Mrs H in her treacle coloured coat

Her one tooth visible

Listening to conversations.

Men on street corners

Outside pubs

Tempers frayed

Always fighting

Money scarce

Pleasures few.

With its sense of tomorrow

And muted colours

Adults listless and violent

London the world of soot and sun

Has a sinister beauty.
