I saw a rock concert today

It had four legs and a golden mane

A hundred and fourteen decibels dressed in a fur coat

Padding the ground with arch and stealthy paw

Playing to a mosquito crowd in a stadium of sand

And brittle cymbal crash dry grass

Its only groupies were the clouds

As its amber gaze drank in wishing wells

Muddy silk bordered with giant grey lace

Majestic trim of elephant's face

And casual baubles antelope and warthog shaped

I saw a rock concert today

It had a tail like a long black whip

Painting the tan savanna's land with a single flick

While paparazzi cubs trailed like spilled gold dust behind

Plush young reporters snapping pictures with their eyes

Tiny bellies begging in fluffy tones for zebra and buffalo carcass

I saw a rock concert today

It ended in a solo of fool's gold

Bronze, pale beige and grey

One final glint of white fang

One final flash of white claw

Prowling into the muggy horizon

So ends the final song

nature poetry
