LIKE THE SEA, SHE SAID
You are like the sea, she said,
your breath coming and going,
washing over me like waves
breaking over stones on a beach.
She feared she would lose herself in those deep and turbulent waters;
she searched for something solid and strong to cling to
when the winds of the world blew her strength away.
Here is a heart, he tried to tell her, longing to be a rock, yet afraid.
To calm her fears, he offered
gifts of words wrapped in music -
sounding echoes of the melodies
she engendered in his soul.
Love is not a victory march*; the music told her; still
he crowed the prize he wanted to believe he had won,
draining from her all that he was trying to fill.
There is a harmony, resounding deep beneath the surface of the water, longing to be sung, yet unheard.
You have rescued me, she said,
set me free from my captive place,
high on the shattered bows of some
other ship-wrecked sailor’s dream.
She sailed beyond him, fleet and graceful, moving into waters
not within his reach. As sweetly as she sang to him - a figurehead;
a seemingly benevolent Siren - she could not rescue him.
There was a boat, he wanted to believe, longing for the sea, yet afraid.
