Dear Unnamed
There are few things that I am absolutely certain of, but my unconditional love for you is one of them. I have always and will always love you with my entire soul. You have always taken such good care of me, and I will forever appreciate every last thing you’ve ever done for me.
Do you remember when we would plant irises around Easer every year in our front yard? You left the seeds in our Easter baskets so we could plant them as a family. They were always so pretty. I loved those flowers because we planted them together.
I love whenever we go on coffee dates together. Spending time with you is one of my favorite things to do. You’re my best friend. I know we fight sometimes, but I will always love and appreciate you for always being there.
I love Christmas because you’ve always made it magical. When we were young, you drove us around the neighborhood to look at the lights. We would put Christmas music on and decorate the tree. I believe Christmas isn’t Christmas without stockings because you made them the best part of the day.
Do you remember all those road trips we took when I was growing up? I will always love going on road trips because you made them so much fun. Do you remember how we listened to Harry Potter on the first trip after I lost my vision? Or how we would blast the radio and sing at the top of our lungs?
I will always love you unconditionally forever and after.

elegy for an unborn daughter
in my dreams, I have a daughter. she has my smile, warm and stretching across her cheeks like it will burst. she has her father’s eyes—soft and gentle—and his laugh. she is perfect. I give her a beautiful name, and she is everything I wish for her to be. she is curious, always asks questions and tries new things and lives without my fear of failure; she is generous, never selfish, but builds firm boundaries; she shows kindness to each soul she meets. I teach her everything my parents taught me. she learns how to read, to escape into a story and to write her own. she learns how to proof a loaf of bread, how to cut butter into flour and dust berries in flour before adding them to batter. she learns how to love, how to be loved. her life is beautiful, free from worry and filled with joy.
