Let it Take a While

A Feminist Poem About Smiles

It can take a while to just smile.

It’s not always easy — sunshine and roses.

And it’s alright. Really, isn’t it all just poses?

Sometimes It’s hard — you’re just not in the mood.

It’s an act so simple but you can’t muster a dimple.

And that’s ok too.

Ignore the smile mores.

A simple facial gesture does not make you more beautiful.

It does not make you more happy.

It does not make you more welcoming.

It does not make you…more.

Don’t let anyone tell you differently.

It’s ok if the smile doesn’t come for a while—

right away, or in a minute, an hour, a day.

Let it take a while.

And when it comes, let it shine.

You’ve got time.
