Let Her Go

A Poem For My Dead Mother

By Celeste BarbierPublished 5 years ago 1 min read
Easter Sunday At Our Lady Of The Pines Catholic Church in Conifer, CO With My Mother circa 1986

Let her go

For peaceful resolution;

For inner absolution

Within my very soul.

Let her go.

Let her go

Impart important lessons

Release repercussions

With forgiveness I grow.

Let her go.

Let her go

Her abuses overt

Her reasons covert

No one will know.

Let her go.

Let her go

"Mother" is an appellation

With Varying interpretation

Some Love, but can't show.

Let her go.

To put this piece into context: This is a poem dedicated to the memory of my Mother, Eileen Ruth Connellan Barber 1947-2008. We had a difficult relationship and were estranged after I turned 18 and she told me she wanted nothing to do with me anymore. She died nearly a decade later, still without any resolve or closure. This has haunted me in many ways though I tried numerous times to write or call her to find some sort of peace in our relationship. After her death, I reached out to her best friend and sister in an attempt to understand her better or why she cut me off the way she did. Unfortunately, they had no answers for me and say they regarded Eileen as a private person who held many secrets that will never be answered. I just have to live with that and Let Her Go!
