Leo in the Cold

And Francis in the Frost

By Sam SpinelliPublished about a year ago 1 min read

barefoot in the snow

two brothers can’t feel their toes

but the brothers smile

and stumble another mile

focused on their task

leo shivers, then he asks:

“Francis do you think

it’s good if our toes turn pink?”

and francis replies

with a glimmer in his eyes

“no brother Leo

for your frozen little toes

are a reminder

there are Many still Poorer!

alas, we cannot

trade ours for the Lepers’ rot

our wealth is a shame

pray: give our health to the Lame!”

leo then inquired

“what more could our God require?

and tell me, Francis,

be there greater joy than this:

if the Lord granted

our prayer of health recanted?”

and francis, he sighed

then after a pause replied:

“if through God’s great grace

we were to heal our whole race

by giving our selves

and our very flesh as a salve

but then being bare

of all possessions and care

we went and asked alms

from another brother’s palms

and he were to curse

to strike us, to spit, and worse

That would be true joy

That would be true, perfect joy

"If by God's grace we should heal our whole race, may we find the strength to embrace unity and compassion. Healing transcends boundaries, binding us together in a shared journey toward peace and understanding. A profound wish for a harmonious, restored world. Nicely done!" check more on;https://ideadash.com/

This was quite powerful and sombre, Sam! love when you write in such an eloquent, if pointed manner and dont avoid the unpleasant truthes! will come back later to read the connected story but this stands on its own! slight editing notes-capitalising the character names and checking the dialogue parts are all in quote marks wouincredible entry though!ld help becaus I got a little lost towards the end but that may just be me!

The option to edit doesn’t seem to show up, oddly enough. But there’s some background to this poem that I thought would be relevant in an author’s note. This is inspired by a public domain story, from “the little flowers of St Francis”, originally written in Italian.
