Learn: Poem #21

Excerpt from Monomyth Melodies

By Hannah Marie. Published 4 years ago 3 min read

In a previous post, I shared the impact of relationships, giving you all a sneak peek at my poetry pamphlet Monomyth Melodies, coming out later this year. Below is one of my poems that doesn't follow the common method of rhyming. Instead, I've used the alphabet as inspiration, tracing each letter at the beginning of each line. I started out wanting to have stanzas, where just sections of the poem would rhyme, but at the end I was able to create an entire piece that bounces off each other, creating one semblance of thought through twenty-six separate phrases. Some of the thoughts are a sentence on their own and others blend into the following line. Either way, I have tried to create moments of thoughtfulness and woven in nuggets of truth. The world is not how we would wish, but every step that we take remind others that we are not in this alone. Sometimes it just takes one voice to stand out.

More than Words.

Even though I wrote this Learn poem several months back, it continually surprises me that the concept behind the poem is still very applicable today. It is easy to get caught up in our everyday lives and to forget that there are people out there who are hurting, who have real needs, and who really just need a helping hand. No, we cannot help everyone, but we can try--there's my Enneagram seven emerging!

Again, like the other poetry posts that I have put together, the amazing thing about this moment is that there are only a few more lines and the reading section will be complete. This is for those of you who like to hear words, but just not many. This is for the person who wants something short to read, but impactful to think about. I hope it inspires you to go out and write something into existence. Poetry is not all about just sonnets and plays. It is the expression of the heart, trying to condense the immense words that we have in our vocabulary and breaking it down into a thought that is understandable and powerful. It needs to be quick and to the point, but also something that the reader will remember right after their eyes leave the page.

Learn: Poem #21

Anticipating the things that are to come

Believing in the strengths of each person

Continues a mindset that is not always realistic

Does anyone follow moral standards anymore?

Everyone reaches for what they think is best

Forgetting that there is a whole world out there

Gaining new insights everyday into culture and I

Hide behind my mask of

Indifference because it is easier to keep my distance, to

Just ignore what is happening right in front of me. Am I going to

Keep looking the other way when I am capable of taking action?

Let my words speak when my mouth won't

May I be bold in my actions when it is hard

Not just when I am hanging around people that make me feel comfortable

Or maybe the insight that I gain when I am satisfied is just the

Push that I need to step out and think about other people

Questioning what I believe is something that should come with purpose

Reasoning out what I say that I

Stand for is part of maturing, which means great

Training is needed. But guess what? This means I must listen to

Understand. To watch others and be willing to admit

Very often times I do not know the answer. There's a rule that Sometimes, You're

Wrong! That is okay because it is part of learning. Who knows?

Xenophobia can only be overcome by emerging from my box. It's people.

Yearning to learn about others means I must become uncomfortable

Zero selfishness, only compassion and love
