Last light

what's left

By Wren HPublished 3 months ago 1 min read
Honorable Mention in Lantern Light Challenge

There’s nothing now

Only two remain

Just the lamp, faint flicker

Against the strain

Of darkness

No light has ever been so cold

No glow so terrible

Even as the distance

Closes

The flicker growing

Brighter

There’s no warmth in

The reminder

That there’s nothing else.

Besides the lamp

What are these feet

Walking on?

Not the land

What do these arms

Feel?

It can’t be air

What is on this

Body?

Is there even a body

Here?

Or just a last breath

Headed towards its

Destiny

At the lamp?

It feels as light

As the darkness

Closing on

That one small flicker

Whispers of a

Reminder

What happens when

The lamp goes out

What does happen

When the lamp

Goes out?

What happens when a

Role held by 2500

Generations

Is finally

Fulfilled?

When that last breath

Is released

And the light goes out

What will there be?

No sound

No feeling

No thought.
