Jean-Leon Gerome, "The Wailing Wall," 1880
Waiting for holiness to be restored
For a new temple and a fresh priesthood
For renewed life for those lost and adored
For peace and joy in every neighborhood

Prayers and rituals and fasts and songs
Confirm that we live out an ageless tale
In which each character fits and belongs
Bread shared with family never tastes stale

Trouble and torment leave no home untouched
All walls have heard bitter weeping and sighs
A symbol or talisman, sadly clutched
Could many now lost softly eulogize

To repair what was broken, long ago
Is as old a yearning as we can know
