Kool-Aid and Ice
A poem of something I like consuming sometimes
Do you know how to make Kool-Aid and Ice?
If you're native or just someone who fawns over sour tastes,
You know how much salt goes
into Kool-Aid and Ice.
.
And if you're feeling fancy,
a nice dash of four lemon slices
adds that extra sense of
sour, you were looking for
If just the salt, water, and Kool-Aid
wasn't enough.
.
When the craving hits, it's the best thing in the world.
The way the salt seems to suck on your tongue
And make you forget the moving parts
Inside your brain and out.
For a brief moment, all you have to focus on is the way your lips pucker up.
.
But, like all tastes, it quickly fades
And sour tastes seem to have the shortest lifespan, don't they?
No matter how great that first spoonful felt,
Your brain and mouth adjust to the range of taste,
And become nagging directors.
Telling you how much focus you need to put on the sour delight.
.
The rest of the drink becomes a background noise,
And you returning to the world,
Both inside your mind and out.
.
Do you know how to make Kool-Aid and Ice?
Because it would be nice if you were someone who could make it last past the first bite of ice.

This makes me think of my daughter's goofy faces that she makes when she sucks on a lemon.
