Kite String

A Sonnet

For so long now I’ve felt tethered.

Like a kite that’s been held down by a string.

Between rose coloured imaginations floating like childhood feathers -

And the expectations that adulthood brings.

You see, as a child you imagine the freedoms of growing up.

I’ll be an artist, an actor and a vet.

But once you get there it’s not all an overflowing cup.

There’s a lot more to this adulting than you’d expect.

So, I’d say my twenty’s have been a time of balancing.

A playground for a happy medium.

That honours the child who imagined me everything -

And lets the adult find her true inspiration.

But no matter what, the ties will never be cut.

Because the string and the wind, well, they're all the kite’s got.
