her kir royal stained her white dress
as she sat alone in a bar,
playing princess.
ready to go home
with any man who would choose
her for the night,
to love or abuse.
.
wasting her youth
and finite beauty
on soulless drunks,
who called her pretty.
.
why couldn’t her father
have spoken kind words?
to give her some small
fragment of self worth?
why couldn’t her mother
have held her close?
instead of calling her worthless
treating her as a ghost?

This one tugs at the heartstrings... Stunning work Kayleigh!
Such a sad yet intense poem! Well written and characterized!
This is the heartbreaking reality for far too many, and you captured it perfectly in your beautiful poem, Kayleigh.
So very sad. You’ve expertly crafted such a tragic character in these lines
This reminds me of the song "sometime around midnight"
How our parents treat us plays a huge role in how we let others treat us. Your poem was so poignant and profound. I loved it so much!

What a poignantly sad poem that reflects so much more than the words therein. Well done.
I hate that for any child.
