Juicy Red

The bigger, the better

An almost forbidden fruit

I would sneak a peak into the kitchen just for a glimpse of crimson shade

These were reserved for dinner meals and lunch omelets

I would use them for my own guilty pleasure

We would buy the big, red, juicy and plump ones

Multiple slices could be cut from this one item

We would never buy more than one or two at a time

So when I would steal one, sometimes that would mean the burgers would lack substance

Maybe the guacamole would be less inspired

The pasta sauce wouldn’t be as red as we had imagined

A touch of salt and one gigantic bite into the very center of my desire

The pulp and liquidness would drip down my chin onto my shirt

Descriptions don’t quite fit

These are memories from decades ago but the taste still lingers

I never grew weary of tomatoes but I don’t recall when the last time was

I never eat tomatoes the way I used to when I was miniature

Somehow, I outgrew my guilty pleasure

It’s not difficult to put a hint of salt on a new tomato

But to rewind back to childhood, that is indeed an adventure worth sinking my teeth into

The scent won’t be the same but it’s not meant to be

Creating new memories with my beloved tomato would be worth the dribble
