It Would Be Wise to Stop

A Merchant's Tale

By Abigail Sire Published 4 years ago 1 min read

He had many friends and many things -

Donkey named Lula, a bull named Maretzi,

A couple of sheep, cats followed him everywhere -

Zuzu, Leonardi, Gypsie and the one with a white patch

On her nose was Elizabeth; as a merchant

He carried many things across the country -

Urns, vases, plates, silk, swatches of fabric,

Sometimes rabbits and small birds -

But mostly he traded in spices and cooking supplies -

His sheep and star were cuddling in the summer heat under a tree -

Yes, yes, it would be wise to stop -

He leapt off of Lula – finding a can of soup from the night before -

And restlessly forging a time with brush and twigs -

Two days till the Sunday market at Syracuse -

He read from Ephesians until his sounds good and hot -

Just a few more minutes before

Filling a pipe

And watching the road pass under him.
