It all started at home

Free verse poem

By Diani AlvarengaPublished 6 months ago 1 min read

I signed her up for the home-based program,

through Metropolitan Family Services.

She was just a baby.

I didn’t know what to expect,

but I knew I wanted her to learn

and I wanted to give her a head start

The visits happened every week

right at home.

They brought toys, books, and activities

and little by little

she started changing.

First it was how she paid attention,

then how she spoke more

asked questions

laughed louder

held the crayon like she meant it.

Over time

she wasn’t just learning,

she was growing into herself

There were days I felt tired

days I felt unsure,

but watching her pick things up so fast

and seeing that bright smile

made everything worth it

Now she’s done with the program

and it’s hard to believe

my little girl is graduating,

getting ready for preschool

ready to meet new kids,

and walk into a classroom without me

It’s emotional,

but it’s also beautiful

because I’ve seen it all happen

every step

and I’m proud

Proud of her

proud of me

and excited for what’s next

She’s ready
