iron shapes iron

Whose your sharpener?

When blades are dull and edges fade,

They need a touch that’s not afraid.

Not comfort’s hand, but something real—

A grinding force that makes them steel.

In a world where individualism is often glorified, this proverb reminds us that personal growth is rarely a solo journey. We become better thinkers, stronger leaders, and more grounded individuals when we surround ourselves with people who challenge and refine us. True friendships and mentorships are not built on flattery or comfort but on truth, honesty, and a shared desire to grow.

Consider the story of Kevin and James, two university friends who met during their first year of engineering school. Kevin was smart but often procrastinated. James, on the other hand, was highly disciplined. Instead of judging Kevin, James started including him in his study sessions, holding him accountable, and encouraging him to keep up with assignments.

At first, Kevin struggled to keep up. The pressure felt uncomfortable. But over time, that “friction” turned into growth. Kevin became more focused and started excelling in his classes. Interestingly, James also benefited — Kevin’s creativity and quick problem-solving helped James think outside the box. They sharpened each other.

Their friendship wasn’t just about academics. When life got tough — stress, family issues, or moments of doubt — they leaned on each other for encouragement and honest advice. Today, they both credit their success not just to hard work, but to the bond that pushed them to be better men.

“Iron sharpens iron” reminds us that we grow through challenge, accountability, and shared purpose. Real friends don’t just make you feel good; they make you better. And you’re called to do the same for others.

The sharpening process isn’t always comfortable. Friction is involved. It may look like constructive criticism, difficult feedback, or a tough love moment. But just as a blade cannot be sharpened without resistance, we cannot grow without being challenged. Just the way Kevin and James having been there for each other in moments of great times and despair.

So the biggest question is what sharpens you? and who are you sharpening?
