Poem “Invisible”
Transracial Adoption: Color does matter!
Prelude:
A poem about self discovery, pain, joy...
And a journey still in progress.
This poem is meant to invoke deep emotions, thoughts and most importantly; empathic discussion.
A young 4 year old brown skinned , biracial black and white mixed adopted child in an all white family asks her Mom,
What color is my skin? Mom answers “ I don’t see color. I just see you”
The adopted black and white child is confused.
An innocent moment that has far reaching dangerous effects leading to an identity crisis.
Think about this:
You don’t see color? Then you don’t see me. If you don’t see me...I don’t exist.
I am invisible in your eyes. My true self no longer exists.
Fear and years of trying to conform. An identity crisis. But... I don’t know it. I am invisible.
I have no color ? Society says I don’t see color. Black and multiracial kids say... You don’t see me.
You don’t see color? You don’t see my sparkling brown eyes. You don’t see my authentic beautiful black skin. You don’t see my black shiny ethnic hair.
You don’t see color? You declare my heritage, all that is unique to me.
Erased.
Deleted...
You don’t see color? You don’t see me. You don’t see my pain. You don’t see the beautiful gift of cultural diversity.
You don’t see color? You are deciding my worth. You put your narrow views on me. According to your beliefs. You are spreading a virus of denial.
You don’t see color? You seem so caring. But your not. You don’t care. You see what you want to see. You assassinate the true essence of me.
You don’t see color?
Are you blind?
Are you scared ?
Are you complacent ?
You don’t see color? Do you see white? Do you say that to a white person?
I don’t think so...
Flip the script. Be present. Be mindful. Words are powerful. Words can uplift or tear down.
You don’t see color ? What do you see? Your own agenda? Your superficial peace offering.
I see color.
I see all shades of color.
I am not color blind.
You don’t see color ? You don’t see the truth. You don’t see your veiled false mindset. You don’t want to see the truth.
I see vibrant colors. I see diverse authentic colors.
I see colors. I see veiled racism. I see all colors.
I see fighting.
I see the proprietion of class.
You don’t see color? You close your eyes to injustice. You are perpetuating the stereotypes.
You don’t see color? I don’t see white. I don’t see you.
I see “color “. I see the color of racism. It is far reaching. Pervasive.
You don’t see color? You don’t see reality. You don’t see the struggle.
You don’t see color. You don’t see the amazing one of a kind miracle. That every human on earth is.
You don’t see color? You don’t see God. You don’t see unconditional love.
You see what you want. And I am supposed to bow down to your determinative declaration? Like that makes everything better?
You don’t see color? You don’t see police brutality. You don’t see racial division. Our reality. The invisible “colorless” reality.
You don’t see color? You don’t see me. You see yourself. Perpetuating a false sense of peace.
You don’t see color? You don’t see white privilege. You don’t see the pay rate inequality. You close your eyes to reality.
You don’t see the judgmental stares. That the so called “invisible” live everyday.
You don’t see color?
Really?
What a nice way to brush all the turmoil and racial divide under the rug.
You don’t see color? Well... I see you. I see your color. I see your denial. I see your picture perfect life.
I see color. I see the truth. I see the beauty of all different races. I see the gift from God of all colors.
All smiles. All caring people. I see...you. The real you.
You don’t see color? You don’t see me.
You don’t see my tears.
You don’t see my joy.
You don’t see my passion.
You don’t see my purpose.
You don’t see color? I do. I see me. I see hope. I see love.
I see amazing possibilities.
I see endless abundance.
I see you...
I see the truth...
The End
