Introduction to Bad News
Sad, yet hopeful, poem about bad news. Based in part off of the style of "Introduction to Poetry" by Billy Collins.
I hear the news
and it stays in my head
like an agonizing migraine
wrapping around the brain, squeezing
People drop words, like people drop bombs, exploding through bodies
steamrolling pressure all around us, and we endeavor to escape, vainly
Burning, buzzing light, and the shriek of a sound pushing against you
until you see the world through squinted eyes and padlocked ears
I want you to open your eyes
and listen to each other
When bombarded with insurmountable grief
take in everything; see it:
Color, music, art, smiles, and life
even the pale when silent recognizes the vain through tears and death
We gain no resolve from closing our eyes and minds
Open your heart to love, and mouth to speak and bring change to the overwhelming
