In Two Places at Once (An Illusion)

Somewhere Between Here and There

I'm not here, I'm elsewhere,

where shadows of past despair linger,

haunting me throughout the year.

Dazzling glare soaks this place.

Each night, contorted faces stare,

blocking worlds between the lines

of lives I've left behind.

Hard to face,

impossible to grasp,

all my former selves.

Endure my past, it's worse.

Here's all I need, just this place,

a quiet haven for my weary soul.

Words spill out, unbidden, free,

heard only by myself, it seems.

No judgment, scorn, or harsh denial.

Driven by the sheer power of syllables,

they work, shaping words one by one,

chapters day by day,

years from weeks and months.

I’ve never forgotten how I felt ,

never forgotten that fragile line

between life and death.

I know what to do with this,

consumed by a black magma of fists

aimed at me.

I'll never miss.

  • Plaintive, evocative, soulful. An excellent entry into this challenge, Maggie.
