Garba is a traditional dance originating in Gujarat, India. Here is a video of it being done properly!

---

This dance is designed to maximise dizziness

and sore hands.

Instead of assuming all those fainting girls

in films were pregnant, they should have asked

have you been dancing garba? Everything is spinning

mostly in the wrong direction but OK,

no-one else knows what they're doing either,

and we're all delighted about it.

Stand still, spin some.

Clap, clap, clap.

Mata Di smiles indulgently and eats her bananas, one in each hand.

When your favoured mode of transport is

the back of a lion,

you're probably used to things moving in a blur.

A white woman arrives; everyone throws her at me.

You think I know all the white people around here or what?

I do know her!

The candles beam like our faces.

Everyone is laughing again, drunk on the dance.

Omgggg you are so right about the fainting girls in movies and people assuming they're pregnant. Lol! I'm familiar with this dance as I've seen it in many Tamil movies. Loved your poem!
