In Spite of the spiral

Peace in the static

By Jay RiversPublished 7 months ago 2 min read

This poem explores the restless mind and the journey of finding calm amidst the noise especially for those living with ADHD or racing thoughts. It’s a reminder to be gentle with yourself and appreciate each moment.

I wake with thoughts that run ahead,

A thousand sparks inside my head.

The world moves fast — so do I,

But even storms still kiss the sky.

I trip on tasks, forget the plan,

Lose my phone — then lose it again.

I speak too quick, I think too loud,

But that’s my mind — a pulsing cloud.

I’m stitched from static, daydream thread,

A bit too much inside my head.

But I have moments soft and still,

Like sunlight falling on a hill.

Not every thought deserves a fight,

Not every flaw must dim my light.

Sometimes I pause and close my eyes,

And let the chaos harmonize.

I count the seconds, miss the cues,

Then wander off inside my shoes.

But still I show up, still I try,

Still I give every breath a why.

Take a breath before you leap,

Your worth is not a race to keep.

You’re not a glitch, you’re wired bright,

Your mind’s a maze that burns with light.

The world says, “Focus, get in line,”

But you don’t have to match their time.

Your rhythm’s real, your tempo true,

And life unfolds the same for you.

So hold your heart when it feels sore,

You don’t need fixing — nothing more.

Be kind to you. Don’t chase the mold.

There’s strength in chaos, calm in bold.

You are not broken, not a mess,

You’re simply wired for more — not less.

And though you sometimes lose your place,

You still show up, you still find grace.

Each skipped beat, each winding way,

Still counts as life, still holds the day.

You’re not behind — you’re on your path,

No need for shame, no need for math.

It’s okay not to always know,

To move too fast, or take it slow.

To wander, wonder, start again,

To lose your map and still transcend.

The world won’t wait — and that’s okay,

You’re here, you’re real, you found today.

In every breath, despite the climb,

You’re living life, one thought at a time.
