In Slumber's Realm

A sonnet

In slumber's realm, a vision came to me

Of a love that was, but now could not be

My wife and I, entwined in sheets of white

But even in passion, our love did not ignite

We had been together, for thirteen long years

Through joy and through tears, through hopes and through fears

But now, in the dream, our love did expire

Leaving only ashes, of a once burning fire

We lay there, tangled in each other's embrace

But even as we moved, I saw the look on her face

Of love turned to sorrow, of hope turned to despair

And in that moment, I knew our love was beyond repair

But as I woke, the vision did depart

Leaving only love, for my dear partner, in my heart.

So now we kiss and part, with heavy hearts

Canceling all our vows, and now we must part

But though we may meet again, in future days

Let it not be seen, in either of our gaze

That any love remains, of what we once had

For now our love is dead, and that is sad.

But even in death, I will hold on tight

To the memories of our love, through day and night.
