In Love With a Martyr

Black Lives Matter

By Jordyn GrantPublished 8 years ago 1 min read

Unapologetically

In Love

with a Martyr.

I am in love with a man.

A man whose blood runs thick and deep

A man whose hair coils like antennas that soar to the sun.

I am unapologetically in love with a man whose skin is sunless and yet hearts’ so warm.

His mahogany skin glistens to the summer's fluorescent bulb

I am deeply in love with a man who lives in constant fear.

Fear to speak unless when spoken to.

A fear of your hate only growing more firm and more able.

I am in love with the black Adam version of Eve

You know...

whether he bites the apple or not

there's thousands of years of history sayin' he has

or will

The man that would fight for a country whose sipped coffee brewed with his blood.

Not to appear more patriotic

but to get a chance ahead

the only thing almost as good as white privilege are those seemly sweet yet bitter benefits granted as an immunity itself not as if you’ve earned it.

I am unapologetically head over heels in love with a martyr.

He's had brown skin and and war scars to prove it.

Do you know the best part of war scars?

They have the power to prompt us.

Remind us of who we are, where we came from, and where we’re going.

I submissively love a man who by birth shares that same blisters as me.
