Ignis Fatuus

a "Lantern Light" poem

By Aaron MorrisonPublished 3 months ago 1 min read

Enthralling dancer

Guide me forward

Beneath these withered branches

Taranis has blotted out the moon and stars

And I have no other attendant

Though legs and feet are nagging

I keep pace

With your swirling

Blinking

Wafting

Ever forward

I had no desire to spoil in the dark

And fester with the duff beneath me

So I welcomed your enticing glow

And pursued the lure

As soon as it became visible

My savior or deceiver

A revelation at the end

Whether I may receive

A justly fate

Or a most unjust reward

My eyes are fixed upon you

And I can hear the lapping waters

Danggg, Aaron, this is so well-written. If it's about fishing, wow. I didn't think I'd like a poem on the subject! At first, I didn't get it as a dark melodic ode to a fishing lure; in fact I was, for some reason, picturing a person walking in a bog or forest at night and finding a mysterious light. But I think the layers in this piece lend to its strength. And hey, if I'm completely off, I still enjoyed it immensely. The way you wrote each line, I can feel the magic. Beautiful work.
