If Only

Time for us stood still but the world kept moving

We spent many a lifetime

As I attempted to understand our first kiss

The feelings are all there but the words amiss

We, I more aware than you, have witnessed

The sun rise and set on civilizations

Newly born and slowly decayed

Nomad tribes continued to move, pilgrims' children around us played

My lips firmly yet softly pressed against yours

Not just air but breaths we shared

So much happened while we embraced right here

Void of any and every single fear

Nothing could touch us, nothing could move us

Love protected us from the bite of angry frost

Kept us safe from the pouring rain and blazing sun

Our embrace would not be undone

We could hear and see all the world but we would not open our eyes

Ignoring the heartbreaking reality that we both understood

Ending this kiss meant letting go

Of our unremitting love affair once and for good

Because you were not and are not mine

Nor am I yours

Our lives are in opposite directions

Families and secrets behind very different and heavily locked doors

If only I could understand the depth and power of this bliss

Maybe I wouldn't have to let you go

If I could show you

What our souls already know

love poems
