If Life Were a Rose

"Life is barren enough surely with all her trappings; let us therefore be cautious how we strip her" Samuel Johnson

By Cassie GPublished about a year ago Updated about a year ago 1 min read

In a conventional way

the form of a bouquet

handpicked, pruned, arranged

transparent its intention

a show of affection

celebration, achievement, romance

accepted and cherished

hinder its perish

watered and vased

displayed with pride

seen in first stride

the foyer table

wilted and worn

its memory mourned

pressed and preserved

But life is scarcely conventional

in a pragmatic display

found in wild disarray

knotted, thorny, weathered

misled by movies

never yours truly

sinister, tantalizing, obscured

forgotten and neglected

no flower collected

seized by weeds

cursed for its strength

avoided at length

further exiled

nevermore desired

the rose grows tired

lament and recur

sad poetry
