If I were a coat

If I were a coat
Dangling on a clothes hanger,
My price would be cold
And the buyer would have to be you.
If I were a coat
Worn on wintry days,
Safe on your body I would hang
And watch the birds
Through the button holes.
If I were a coat
Thrown and folded on a floor,
I would wait for you
No matter how long I lay there
Alone, untouched, and dead.
