A Letter to the Moon

Apogee -

The farthest reach of the moon's orbit.

Dear Moon,

How does it feel

to spend your life

chasing after the Sun?

How does it feel

to let your light

be reduced to merely

a reflection of its fire?

How does it feel

to spend your nights

chasing wholeness, only to

find it for a moment

before your wings

are waned away again?

But you were whole all along.

You glow with borrowed light,

yet still have the power

to eclipse the Sun completely.

How does it feel

to knock the Sun

out of the sky?

How does it feel

to know the tides

are at your mercy,

regardless of how

brightly you glow?

It is said that Icarus

flew too close to the Sun

and fell into the Sea,

so it was your lap

that broke his fall.

Yet we don’t fault the Sun

for burning so brightly

that it clipped his wings.

We don’t fault the Sun

for eclipsing the stars,

or making the moon

fight to share in its light.

The Sun may burn brighter,

it may burn hot enough

to melt wax wings,

but it was you

who held the power

all along.

It was you

who cradled chaos

and rocked it to sleep.

And still, it was you

who pulled Icarus

into your embrace.

Had he flown at night,

you would not have

let him fall in the first place,

because you know

what it feels like

to chase the Sun

and lose your wings.
