I’ve Gone Home

Inspired by the grave of a soldier

I had the privilege of laying wreaths on veteran’s graves through Wreaths Across America. Many of the graves were the final resting places of unknown soldiers. Thank you to all who have served, with your time and with your lives.

If waves of grief come crashing

And make breath hard to find,

If my absence is a weight

That sore burdens your mind,

If salty tears come pouring

No matter where you roam,

I have one final request;

Weep not, for I’ve gone home.

//

I went to war full-knowing

The dangers that I’d face,

I did not want to leave you

Nor your loving embrace.

If my loss has you cursing

Our God, and his great Tome,

I’ll ask of you one more grace;

Curse not, for I’ve gone home.

//

The pain I felt was fleeting

I can scarcely recall,

Pain now swallowed by glory

Please know this, and stand tall.

Though if the things I’m missing

Have you raging alone,

I’ll make one final appeal,

Rage not, for I’ve gone home.

//

Of course, I wish I’d had time

To grow and age with you,

But, if with my sacrifice

I served, then I’ll not rue.

If all your grief has hardened,

Into an icy stone,

Once more, I will beseech you,

Please thaw, for I’ve gone home.

//

If by my headstone you sit,

Eyes fixed on clouds and sky,

Searching for a piece of me

In the wind’s gentle cry,

If you wait there for starlight

Seeking me in night’s dome,

Please, sweet love mine, I beg you;

Search not, for I’ve gone home.
