I took the Child

S.E.Linn

By S. E. LinnPublished about a year ago 2 min read

I awoke in the night,

Not knowing what for.

I heard a small child crying,

Outside my door.

I opened my door,

Went towards the sound,

But when I turned on the light,

The child was not found.

Puzzled, I listened,

Trying to find,

The lost little child,

Who lives in my mind.

You've left me there!

You've left me behind!

Alone and afraid,

Come and find me, she whined.

But the door to that house,

Where she stood was not here.

T'was the house where I'd lived as a child,

and found dear.

So, I went back to find her,

Lost and afraid.

I needed her presence,

in this life I had made.

Back I went through my mind,

through a beautiful maze,

Tried to tear through the cobwebs,

Tried to clear out the haze.

When I finally got there,

the blue-eyed girl sat,

You forgot about me!

You left me and my cat!

Look deep in my eyes,

Kneeling down at her feet,

I looked up at her face

framed by spiral curls the color of wheat.

Look into my eyes, and as our gaze met,

This was the last moment I'd never forget.

I'm so sorry, my darling,

Oh, will you forgive?

I've come back to get you,

Within me, you'll live.

If you come with me now,

I won't leave you this time.

She raised up her arms,

And she knew she'd be fine.

I picked up that child,

Swung her up on my hip.

Love circled around us,

like a long, golden whip.

Can I bring my cat?

She was hopeful with trust.

Why not? I smiled down,

Bring old Tank if you must.

Hold on now, I warned,

Her arms held on tight.

We flew through a lifetime,

Fifteen thousand long nights.

You came back for me!

The little girl smiled.

I knew you would come!

It sure took you awhile.

I promise I'll never leave you behind.

We will live on together,

Peace and solace you'll find.

Those days of your past,

Are behind that closed door.

Your unnoticed whispers

will be silenced no more.

She echoes through the chambers,

Of my subconscious mind.

Lost and forgotten,

Not easy to find.

A priceless gift,

A legacy.

Just promise me, sweetheart,

You will never leave me.
